Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has criticised the club’s hierarchy for failing to sign more quality players during the summer transfer window.

His comments followed United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, adding to the pressure on the Premier League side.

United made a poor start as Pablo Barrios scored for Atletico within the opening minute. The Red Devils attempted to fight back by creating scoring opportunities but failed to convert their chances.

The situation worsened when Leny Yoro received a straight red card for denying Jonathan David a clear goalscoring opportunity. Ademola Lookman later scored Atletico’s second goal to seal the victory.

Speaking to Prime Video Sport after the match, Martinez expressed disappointment with the club’s recruitment and said he had expected more from the technical director.

“Yes. Honestly, I expected more. 100%. I expected more from our technical director; I have to be honest. As players, we have to do more, but it’s important to have a strong squad,” he said.

Martinez also defended manager Michael Carrick, arguing that the club must look beyond the coach and players when addressing its problems. “You can’t keep changing, changing, changing managers. But what about other areas? I can’t say more. It’s easy to blame the coach and the players, but we also have to talk about others, eh?” he added.
