Former France international Jean-Pierre Papin has revealed his preferred candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, backing Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.

Papin acknowledged that Mbappe and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal have also enjoyed impressive seasons, but he maintains a slight preference for the England captain.

“I have a slight preference for Harry Kane, but Kylian Mbappe has also had a very good season, as has Lamine Yamal,” Papin said, as quoted by SPORT.

The former striker also praised Yamal’s exceptional talent, suggesting the Barcelona star could dominate the prestigious individual award for several years if he wins it.

“I am afraid that once Lamine Yamal gets his hands on it, he will keep it for several years, because he is so incredible every day,” Papin said.

He continued by highlighting the teenager’s creativity and ability to produce something unexpected whenever he plays. “Every time I watch him play, I get the impression that he invents something,” he added.

Despite his admiration for Yamal, Papin reiterated his preference for Kane, saying: “Lamine could win it too, but I would have a slight preference for Harry Kane.”
