Nigeria Would Have Developed More If It Was Colonised Longer – Kiddwaya

Reality TV star, Tersee Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has sparked debate after claiming that Nigeria would have been more developed if Britain had continued its colonial rule for another 10 to 15 years.

Kiddwaya argued that Nigeria may have benefited from a longer period of British rule, suggesting that the country’s independence came too early.

Britain granted Nigeria independence in 1960 after years of pressure from nationalists and political activists. The country later became a republic in 1963, severing its remaining constitutional ties with Britain.

In a recent post on X, Kiddwaya described his position as an unpopular opinion and suggested that an extended colonial period could have produced better development.

“Unpopular opinion. The British should have stayed in Nigeria for 10/15 more years. You go see better development,” he wrote.

His comment generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media.

While some agreed with him, arguing that Nigeria has struggled with leadership and development since gaining independence, others strongly disagreed.

Critics of his position argued that extending colonial rule would not necessarily have benefited Nigerians, claiming that the British could have continued exploiting the country’s natural resources rather than prioritising its development.

The debate has once again brought attention to Nigeria’s colonial history, independence and the challenges the country has faced since becoming self-governing.
