Takutaha Maulud: Kano declares Sept 1 work-free day

The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a work-free day to allow residents to celebrate Takutaha, the annual traditional and religious procession observed across the state.

The declaration, contained in Circular No. 7/2026 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Abba A. Danguguwa, on behalf of the Head of Service, said the holiday coincides with 19th Rabi’ul Awwal, 1448AH.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the directive, which was communicated to senior government officials, including commissioners, permanent secretaries, and heads of agencies.

The government described Takutaha as a significant occasion with deep spiritual and cultural meaning, urging civil servants to use the day for prayers and reflection to seek divine blessings for peace and prosperity in Kano and Nigeria. It added that essential services would continue to operate as usual.

Takutaha, a centuries-old tradition celebrated every 19th of Rabi’ul Awwal, marks the seventh-day naming ceremony after the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The historical procession draws crowds from far and near, with participants dressed in colourful regalia, chanting praises of the Prophet in groups as they march through the ancient city.

Many march in procession to twin Dala and Goron Dutse hills, where they climb to feast, share meals, and enjoy religious performances while overlooking Kano.
