Civil Rights Group Hails Tinubu’s Decision to Stall Appointment of Acting Accountant-General

The Civil Rights Defenders’ Network of Nigeria (CRDNN) has commended President Bola Tinubu’s bold move to stay the appointment of Mr. Babatunde Ogunjimi as the new acting Accountant-General of the Federation.
According to the CRDNN, this decision demonstrates the President’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the civil service and ensuring that appointments are made based on merit, transparency, and accountability.
In a statement signed by Musa Nda Musa, CRDNN expressed concerns that Ogunjimi misled his promoters to secure the appointment despite the current occupant, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, still being in office.
Musa said this attempt to manipulate the system highlights the entrenched interests that have long undermined the effectiveness and efficiency of the civil service.
Furthermore, the CRDNN noted that Ogunjimi is the least qualified person to hold the office, having been posted out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and not being in the line of succession as the most senior director in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
The CRDNN urged President Tinubu to remain resolute in his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that appointments are made based on merit, transparency, and accountability.
The group also called on the Head of Service to provide guidance and advice to the President, grounded in the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness.
The statement said: “We are convinced that the acting Accountant General misled his promoters within the system to erroneously recommend him to Mr. President for the appointment at a time when the tenure of the current occupant, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, was still running.
“This brazen attempt to manipulate the system is a stark reminder of the entrenched interests that have long undermined the effectiveness and efficiency of the civil service.
“However, what is even more disturbing is the fact that the acting Accountant General, who purportedly tried to manipulate his way into the position, is the least qualified person to hold that office.
“Having been posted out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was not in the line of succession as the most senior director in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
“This glaring anomaly raises fundamental questions about the criteria used to recommend him for the position and the motivations of those who sought to elevate him to this critical office.
“The CRDNN commends President Tinubu for his leadership and vision in upholding the integrity of the civil service. By staying the appointment, the President has sent a clear message that his administration will not tolerate any attempts to subvert the rules and procedures governing appointments in the civil service.
“We urge the President to remain resolute in his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that appointments are made based on merit, transparency, and accountability.
“We also call on the Head of Service to continue to provide guidance and advice to the President on matters related to the civil service, while ensuring that such advice is grounded in the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness.
“Furthermore, we recommend that the President takes this opportunity to undertake a comprehensive review of the civil service rules and procedures governing appointments, promotions, and discipline.
“This review should aim to identify and address any loopholes or weaknesses that may be exploited by unscrupulous individuals seeking to subvert the system.”

Jos-Based CSO Faults Amnesty International Over ‘Inflated’ Death Toll, Defends FG’s Response to Plateau Attack

A civil society organisation based in Jos, Coalition for Peace and Security Monitoring in Nigeria (CPSMN), has condemned the latest report by Amnesty International on the recent attack in Zikke village, Bassa LGA of Plateau State, describing it as “grossly exaggerated, misleading, and detached from reality.”
In a statement released on Monday and signed by its Executive Director, Pastor John Bulus, the group accused Amnesty of fanning the flames of fear and tension with “fabricated figures and alarmist claims” that do not reflect the true situation on ground.
“We strongly reject the distorted narrative pushed by Amnesty International. Their claim that 1,336 people were killed in just three months in Plateau State is not only outrageous but completely unverified. Where is their evidence? Who gave them these numbers?” Bulus queried.
According to the group, CPSMN has been on ground in Zikke and other affected communities, assessing the situation, supporting survivors, and working closely with local leaders and security agencies.
“While we acknowledge the attack in Zikke and mourn the lives lost, we will not sit back and allow a foreign NGO with no presence here to weaponise our pain for global headlines,” the statement said.
Pastor Bulus maintained that the federal and Plateau State governments have continued to intensify security operations in volatile areas, adding that collaborative efforts between the military, police, and local vigilante groups have significantly reduced the scale of violence in recent months.
“It is irresponsible and dangerous for Amnesty International to overlook these efforts and spread narratives that only embolden criminals and discourage citizens. Our communities are not abandoned — they are being protected.”
He also criticised Amnesty’s call for independent investigations, saying the group has no credibility to make such demands when it has consistently ignored government responses and local efforts at peacebuilding.
“We challenge Amnesty International to provide a list of the names, dates, and locations of the so-called 1,336 victims. Until then, we consider their report nothing more than a sensational, data-free attack on the Nigerian state,” the CPSMN declared.
The group further urged the international community to disregard Amnesty’s “reckless propaganda” and instead support homegrown solutions being championed by civil society, religious leaders, and security stakeholders on the Plateau.
“Nigeria needs partners, not provokers. The people of Plateau State need healing and unity — not global organisations stoking division from a distance,” Bulus added.

Centre Lauds Water Resources Minister Utsev Over Outstanding Performance

*hails key reforms in less than two years
The Centre for Public Advocacy on Governance (CPAG) has commended the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, for his exceptional leadership and commitment to ensuring water and food security in Nigeria.
Under his guidance, the Centre said the Ministry has made significant strides in sanitation, water supply, and flood control, showcasing a strong focus on climate resilience and sustainable water management.
In a statement signed by Dr. Ifure Tansi Ikpa, the group added that the Ministry has declared 34 additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) open defecation-free, bringing the national total to 136 LGAs in 2024.
This achievement, Ikpa said, is a testament to the Ministry’s efforts to improve sanitation across the country.
Furthermore, he said over 40 water supply projects have been completed across rural, small-town, and urban areas, improving access to clean water for thousands of Nigerians.
“The Ministry has also implemented 44 projects under the PEWASH programme and 45 under the SURWASH programme, demonstrating its commitment to water and sanitation development,” the statement noted.
“Additionally, 64 projects were funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Inclusive Basic Delivery System for Development and Livelihood Empowerment Improvement Project.
“In the area of water quality, sanitation, and hygiene, the Ministry has made notable advancements. The National Water Quality Reference Laboratories in Asaba and Umuahia have been completed, enhancing water quality monitoring and testing.
“The Clean Nigeria Campaign has also achieved a significant milestone, with 142 LGAs validated as Open Defecation Free (ODF). The Ministry has also made progress in flood control and dam development.
“Ongoing nationwide dam safety assessments aim to ensure the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s dams. Completed irrigation projects include the Dadin-Kowa and Bakolori Irrigation Schemes, with new projects commenced in Ondo, Kwara, Benue, Kebbi, Edo, Adamawa, and Oyo States.
“The Ministry has hosted key initiatives, including the 4th Regional Workshop on Water Users’ Associations (WUAs) in Uyo. Preparations are also underway for the ICID-6th African Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage, scheduled for April 2025 in Abuja.
“The Federal Government, UNESCO, and other partners have pledged support for groundwater management to ensure water security. This commitment was made during a two-day validation and capacity-building workshop organized by UNESCO.”
The Centre for Public Advocacy on Governance applauds Professor Utsev’s outstanding performance and vision for Nigeria’s water resources development.
They, however, urged him to continue the progress and collaboration in the water sector.
