2026 Ballon d’Or: Michael Owen Agrees With Kylian Mbappe On Who Should Win Award

Former England striker Michael Owen has said Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has a strong chance of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Owen acknowledged that Mbappe’s lack of major trophies could work against him despite his impressive performances for both club and country.

Speaking to Get French Football News, Owen agreed with Mbappe’s belief that he deserves the prestigious award, pointing to the Frenchman’s goalscoring achievements during the year.

“I absolutely think he has a big chance to win it. When you top the scoring charts in La Liga and also in a World Cup, you have to be seriously considered for this award,” Owen said.

However, Owen noted that Mbappe’s failure to win a major title could affect his chances, particularly in a World Cup year. He pointed out that Real Madrid did not win La Liga or the Champions League.

“However, ultimately, not winning a major title in a World Cup year, plus neither La Liga nor the Champions League, may count against him,” he added.

Owen also reflected on winning the Ballon d’Or himself in 2001, saying he did not actively ask people to vote for him. He noted that social media has changed how players and the award are viewed today. Mbappe, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane are among the leading contenders for this year’s award.
