2026 Ballon d’Or: There’s No One Like Him – Romero Names Player That Should Win

Atletico Madrid defender Cuti Romero has said Argentina captain Lionel Messi deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Romero, speaking to ESPN, backed his compatriot to receive the prestigious individual award despite his age and long career at the top level.

“The Ballon d’Or should be given to Leo Messi. Until he retires, that’s clear,” Romero said.

“There is no one like him. Surely when he decides not to play anymore, then we will have to see who to give it to!” he added.

Messi has enjoyed a remarkable career and has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, more than any other player in the history of the prize.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain has also been included among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, keeping him in contention for another award.

Romero’s comments show the level of admiration he still has for Messi, whom he believes should remain the leading candidate for the prize until he eventually retires from football.
