2027: Assess politicians promises carefully, Sultan tells voters

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, 111, has urged Nigerians to carefully assess the promises of politicians before deciding who to vote for in the 2027 general elections.

He also cautioned politicians against politicising insecurity and other national challenges in their campaigns, urging them to focus on issues that would promote peace, unity and development.

The Sultan spoke on Monday when he received the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Campaign Council, led by its Director-General, Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar, at his palace in Sokoto.

He said voters should listen carefully to the promises of politicians during the electioneering period and make their choices based on what they believed would best serve their interests and those of the country.

The Sultan urged political parties and their candidates to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns, respect the choices of the electorate and play politics in a manner that would strengthen national unity and development.

He said no government anywhere in the world could completely eradicate insecurity and poverty, but could work towards reducing their effects on the people.

The Sultan wished members of the APC campaign council success and prayed for continued peace, stability and good governance in Nigeria.

Earlier, Senator Yari said the delegation was at the palace to seek the Sultan’s fatherly guidance, advice and prayers ahead of the party’s 2027 electioneering campaign.

Yari said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, even before becoming president, demonstrated commitment to the development of the North and the country by supporting other leaders and development initiatives.

He said the APC-led Federal Government had several achievements to showcase to Nigerians, particularly under President Tinubu.

According to him, the administration has remained committed to promoting peace, unity and cohesion across the country. Yari assured the Sultan that the party would conduct peaceful campaigns and appealed for his continued support and prayers.

Also speaking, Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, said the 2027 electioneering process had commenced nationwide in line with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Aliyu said the campaign council deemed it necessary to pay an early visit to the Sultan because of his position as the spiritual leader of the Muslim Ummah and his longstanding commitment to peace and national unity.

He said the delegation was at the palace to seek the Sultan’s fatherly guidance, prayers and royal blessings ahead of the elections.

The delegation included Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko; Senator Adamu Aliero; Senator Ali Modu Sheriff; former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari; and former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, among others.
