Lionel Messi has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or despite retiring from international football with Argentina this week.

The Inter Miami forward played his final match for Argentina in a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic during a farewell international friendly.

The 39-year-old was also included among the 30 nominees shortlisted for this year’s Ballon d’Or, which recognises outstanding individual performances in football.

According to Polymarket Sports on Thursday, Messi had a 7 per cent chance of winning the award, placing him third in the market’s predictions.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane led the figures with a 54 per cent chance, while Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal followed with 40 per cent.

Messi’s position among the contenders comes despite his decision to end his Argentina career, following years of success with the national team.
