Friendly: Portugal Coach Martinez Reacts To Victory Over Super Eagles
Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has reacted after his team defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a friendly match.
The former European champions secured a 2-1 win over Éric Chelle’s side at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night.
The match served as Portugal’s final warm-up game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The hosts created several early chances but failed to convert before Pedro Neto put them ahead in the 23rd minute.
Nigeria responded strongly and equalised through Akor Adams eight minutes before half-time.
However, Francisco Conceição came off the bench to score the winning goal for Portugal 15 minutes before full-time.

He said:
“It was a fantastic test, the opponent was demanding, from a different culture, we don’t usually play against African teams.
“I think today we had an opponent with players who have a lot of physical ability and use attacking movements very well, without needing much combination to get into the area.”

World Cup 2026: ‘It’ll Be Difficult’ – Argentina Coach Scaloni Speaks On Winning Trophy Again
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has admitted that defending the FIFA World Cup title will be a difficult task as his team prepares to begin their campaign.
La Albiceleste are set to start their title defence against Algeria on June 17.
Argentina won their third World Cup title just over three and a half years ago after defeating France on penalties in the 2022 final in Qatar.
Since that triumph, Scaloni’s side has recorded only four defeats across international friendlies, the 2024 Copa America, and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
They have also won their last five matches, including a dominant 3-0 victory over Iceland in their most recent warm-up game.
Their strong run of form ahead of the tournament has placed them at the top of the latest FIFA rankings.
Speaking after the friendly against Iceland, Scaloni said winning back-to-back World Cups would not be easy, but assured that his players would give their maximum effort.
He said:
“It is quite challenging to claim that we will win the World Cup again, as it is very difficult; however, I can assure you that these players will give their all on the pitch. We will strive until the very end.”
Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan as they aim to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups.
According to Opta’s latest forecast, Argentina are currently the fourth favourites to win the tournament, with a 10.5% chance of lifting the trophy.

Mexico Shine as World Cup 2026 Begins

The opening day delivered drama, history, and anticipation as football’s biggest event returned to North America after eight years of preparation.
Mexico Opens Against Familiar Rival

The match was more than just a contest; it was a statement of intent. Mexico, buoyed by home support, entered the game determined to showcase their readiness to compete on football’s grandest stage. For South Africa, the clash offered an opportunity to upset the hosts and remind the world of their resilience.
Guadalajara Hosts Group A Clash
Attention then shifted to Guadalajara, where Korea Republic faced Czechia in another Group A fixture. The match brought together two teams with contrasting journeys. Korea Republic arrived with a reputation for discipline and speed, while Czechia carried momentum from their UEFA play-off success.
The encounter highlighted the diversity of styles at the tournament, with Asia and Europe represented in a battle for early control of the group. Both sides knew that a strong start could prove decisive in their quest to advance.
A Tournament of Records
World Cup 2026 is already historic. It is the first edition hosted by three nations and promises to be the largest in scale, with expanded participation and venues spread across North America. For Mexico, the tournament marks its third time as host, cementing its place as one of the most significant nations in World Cup history.
The opening day reflected the global excitement surrounding the event. Fans from across continents gathered in stadiums and tuned in worldwide, underscoring football’s unmatched ability to unite cultures and nations.
What Lies Ahead
Matchday 1 set the stage for a month-long spectacle. Mexico’s performance against South Africa will be closely scrutinized as the hosts aim to progress deep into the competition. Meanwhile, the Guadalajara clash between Korea Republic and Czechia added intrigue to Group A, leaving fans eager to see how the standings will evolve.
Beyond the results, the tournament represents a celebration of football’s growth. With expanded teams and venues, World Cup 2026 is expected to deliver unforgettable moments, new heroes, and stories that will resonate long after the final whistle.
