Several Nigerians, including celebrities, had campaigned against her planned show in Lagos, accusing the singer of failing to use her platform to speak against xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Following the backlash, Tyla cancelled her scheduled Lagos concert.
However, speaking at the South African Music Awards over the weekend, the singer expressed her desire to see greater unity across the continent.
In a video from the event, Tyla said she was proud to be South African and African while calling for a unified Africa.
“And I am just so happy to be South African. I’m happy to be African most of all.
“I pray one day to see a unified Africa. It’s so important,” she said.
