CAF reverts AFCON to two-year Cycle
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its previous decision and restored the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a two-year cycle.
The decision was unanimously approved during a CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe had recently announced at the continent’s strategy conference in Cabo Verde that the executive committee would review the decision taken last year to stage AFCON every four years.
CAF had previously proposed that the newly introduced Africa Nations League would replace AFCON as the competition held every two years.
However, the governing body explained that the Africa Nations League would need several years to become globally competitive and financially self-sustaining.
The latest decision means AFCON will continue to be organised every two years, reversing the earlier plan to extend the tournament’s cycle to four years.
