Carabao Cup is least important competition – Alonso reveals trophy Chelsea want
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has described the Carabao Cup as the “least important” competition for the club this season following their elimination in the fourth round.
The Blues were knocked out by Liverpool on Wednesday night after a closely contested encounter at Anfield.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring from the penalty spot, but Liverpool responded with a penalty of their own to level the match.
Neither team could find a winning goal during normal time, with the game ending 1-1 and proceeding to a penalty shoot-out.
Liverpool eventually triumphed 6-5 in the shoot-out, securing their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and ending Chelsea’s campaign in the competition.
Speaking after the match, Alonso explained Chelsea’s priorities, saying: “This is the least important competition for us.”
