Delta Govt. partners NIMC on NIN sensitisation, registration
The Delta Government says it is partnering the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to sensitise residents to register and obtain their National Identification Number (NIN).
The Director-General, Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr Fred Oghenesivbe disclosed this in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Asaba.
Oghenesivbe said that the partnership agreement was reached when the State Coordinator of NIMC, Mrs Grace Obels-Robinson visited the bureau on Thursday.
He said that the partnership was strategically important because of the critical role of NIN to national development and security.
“Beyond being a reliable means of identification, NIN is essential for effective planning of social welfare programmes, generation of credible population data and accurate capture of taxable income,” he said.
The DG lauded President Bola Tinubu for approving the mass registration of all unregistered Nigerians.
He described the initiative as a major step towards ensuring that every citizen was properly documented at the unit, ward, local government and state levels.
Oghenesivbe recommended the introduction of NIN cards embedded with chips that contain comprehensive citizens’ data in line with global best practices.
He assured the commission of the bureau’s readiness to work closely with NIMC in order to sensitise the residents of Delta ahead of the exercise.
Speaking, Obels-Robinson said that the visit was to seek the bureau’s collaboration in mobilising residents of the state to participate in the NIN enrolment exercise scheduled to begin on Jan. 19.
The NIMC official said that the exercise would focus on unregistered adult residents and children
She said that the registration exercise would run for six weeks across every ward in the state.
