EFL Cup: Why I Removed Enzo Fernandez From Chelsea Squad – Xabi Alonso

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why Enzo Fernandez was left out of the squad for their EFL Cup second-round match against League One side Luton Town.

Chelsea went on to defeat Luton Town 2-0 to progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Fernandez’s absence came amid growing speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge, with Manchester City reportedly interested in signing the Argentine midfielder before the transfer deadline.

Speaking to the media after the decision, Alonso explained that the club had considered both the player’s situation and the team’s needs before deciding not to include him.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Alonso said:

“We evaluated both individual and team situations, and we have concluded that he will not be part of the squad today.”

When asked about Fernandez’s future at Chelsea, Alonso admitted that the situation remains uncertain.

“Let’s see. We must be ready for anything.”

The decision has attracted attention because Alonso had previously said during his pre-match press conference that Fernandez had been training well and was expected to feature against Luton.

According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Chelsea and Manchester City are still holding discussions over a possible transfer, with Fernandez’s absence reportedly linked to the ongoing negotiations.

Chelsea are reportedly demanding £120 million for the 25-year-old midfielder.

Manchester City have already spent more than £200 million on their midfield rebuild, having signed Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
