EPL: ‘He is intelligent’ – Alonso confirms Chelsea defender will play in midfield against Arsenal
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that captain Reece James will play in midfield when the Blues face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
James, 26, is primarily a right-back but has occasionally played in central midfield in recent seasons. Alonso appears ready to use him more regularly in the position as Chelsea continue to adopt a 3-4-3 formation.
The England international’s physical strength, experience and leadership could be important when Chelsea travel to the Emirates Stadium to face the Premier League champions.
Asked whether James could become one of the best midfielders in the world, Alonso said: “I would say so. He appears very comfortable and confident in that role.”
“He has the intelligence required to excel there. He understands how to connect with his teammates in the midfield and knows the optimal actions to take before and after receiving the ball. His awareness is commendable.”
Alonso also pointed to James’ previous experience in the position, insisting that playing in midfield is not something completely new for the Chelsea captain.
“I recall witnessing him perform exceptionally well in that position. Therefore, we are indeed utilising him. He will accumulate significant playing time as a primary midfielder.”
“I was aware of his capability to play there. I remember his performance in the last Club World Cup final in New York, where he partnered with Moi in the midfield.”
The Chelsea boss also recalled James playing in midfield against Liverpool at Anfield last season, adding that the defender already understands what is required of him.
“This is not unfamiliar territory for him; I am not uncovering anything new. I think it aligns with the team’s requirements and his position within the squad.”
Alonso believes James’ influence goes beyond his technical ability, highlighting his leadership and physical presence.
“His influence, both emotionally and in terms of captaincy and leadership in the midfield, is significant; he is involved in all aspects and can fulfil a crucial role.”
“He is already aware of his positioning. He possesses the ability to assist his teammates, which is very important to me, as he brings a strong presence.”
“He commands respect from his teammates; when he speaks, they listen and follow his lead.”
James could be partnered in midfield by Moises Caicedo, although the Ecuadorian will face a late fitness assessment before the Arsenal clash.
