EPL: Mikel urges Alonso to give ‘frustrated’ Chelsea star more minutes before he leaves
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged manager Xabi Alonso to give Estevao more playing time amid reports that the young Brazilian is frustrated with his limited opportunities at the club.
Estevao joined Chelsea from Palmeiras in the summer of 2025 and impressed during his first season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists for the Blues.
However, the winger suffered a hamstring injury in April, which ruled him out of Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. Since returning, he has struggled to secure regular playing time under Alonso this season.
The 19-year-old is reportedly behind Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro in Alonso’s selection of attacking players. Mikel believes Chelsea should make better use of the youngster’s talent, even if he does not start matches.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel praised Estevao’s performances since arriving at Stamford Bridge, saying, “I just think what Estevao did last season since joining the football club, he’s been superb, he’s been brilliant.”
He added, “Okay, maybe don’t start him in games. But bring him on in the second half because he is brilliant.” Mikel also said the winger had given supporters plenty of excitement whenever he came onto the pitch.

Although he stressed that his comments were not intended as a criticism of Alonso, Mikel warned that Chelsea must ensure the youngster remains at the club. “There are rumours now that he’s frustrated and wants to leave the club. We don’t want to see that,” he said.
