EPL: ‘They Can’t’ – Hasselbaink Names Top Team That Won’t Win Title
Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has explained why he believes Chelsea will not win the Premier League title this season.
Speaking during a discussion with Jim White, the former Netherlands international was asked whether he considers Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea side serious title contenders.
Hasselbaink said Chelsea are unlikely to win the title and insisted that they are still behind Arsenal in terms of quality, experience and consistency.
He also pointed to Chelsea’s disappointing league finish last season, arguing that finishing 10th showed there were major problems that could not be solved immediately.
Jim White said on talkSPORT, “I believe Chelsea should be regarded as title challengers this season, Jimmy. What do you think?”
Hasselbaink responded, “Not yet. Not yet. Because considering what transpired last year, you cannot transition from, where did they finish? 11th. Oh, 10th, alright.
“From 10th to title contender immediately. If you finish 10th, there must have been significant issues. Right? And that is…”
White interjected, “Well, yes, the manager departed midway through.”
Hasselbaink replied, “Yes, but there must be other factors. Yes?”
White then asked, “So they are not capable of winning it this season?”
Hasselbaink responded, “Of course they are capable.”
White remarked, “Oh, they are capable.”
Hasselbaink clarified, “But that is not what you are asking me, is it?”
White continued, “I am asking you, can they contend for the title? Are they capable of challenging for the title?”
Hasselbaink replied, “Of course they will challenge. But they will not win it.”
White probed, “They will not win it.”

Hasselbaink affirmed, “No. Because I believe Arsenal is significantly stronger. They are much further along mentally and also more mature. They are much further in their journey and far more consistent. Chelsea has a new manager, a new philosophy, and is playing with five at the back.”
