EPL: Why I played goalkeeper Emi Martinez in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton – Alonso
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has explained his decision to hand new goalkeeper Emi Martinez his debut in Chelsea’s 4-3 Premier League victory over Brighton on Sunday.
The World Cup winner was selected just hours after completing his move to Chelsea from Aston Villa. Despite the short time he had spent with the team, Alonso said he had no concerns about playing the experienced Argentine immediately.
Martinez conceded three goals on his debut, but Chelsea secured all three points through goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer.
Alonso said Martinez’s experience and confidence made it easier to trust him from the start. The Chelsea manager added that the goalkeeper already felt prepared after their discussions before the game.
The Spaniard also praised Martinez’s leadership and presence, saying his experience would help strengthen Chelsea’s defence as he becomes more familiar with his new teammates.
