Falconets Defeat England 3-0 to Advance to the Quarterfinals of the U20 World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Falconets defeated England 3-0 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowe, and Mary Mmadu scored goals in the thrilling round-of-16 match between the two countries, which the Falconets won thanks to better firepower at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium.

Nigeria got off to a better start as Rafiu scored a spectacular solo goal eight minutes in.

Before putting a low shot into the far corner of the net for 1-0, the midfielder sprinted through on goal and turned England player May Cruft inside out in the penalty area.

Christiana Uzoma, the custodian, prevented the young Lionesses from equalising from the penalty spot. To maintain her team’s lead, the Nigerian captain tipped the spotkick onto the bar before collecting the ball.

Two minutes into the second half, the girls led by Moses Aduku extended their lead thanks to a half-cleared corner kick. Akekoromowe, a striker, was on hand to smash a volley into the net at the near post for 2-0.

In their last group match, Nigeria defeated New Caledonia 10-1. Mmadu’s side-footed attempt on minute 73 clinched the three-goal victory after Akekoromowe’s interception on the edge of the box.

Nigeria has already defeated England twice, and the Falconets maintained their perfect record against the European country.

Nigeria advances to the quarterfinals for the ninth time in the tournament’s history and makes their first appearance in the final eight since 2022.

On September 20, the Falconets will play either Colombia or Poland in the quarterfinals.
