Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has reacted after his team defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a friendly match.

The former European champions secured a 2-1 win over Éric Chelle’s side at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night.

The match served as Portugal’s final warm-up game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The hosts created several early chances but failed to convert before Pedro Neto put them ahead in the 23rd minute.

Nigeria responded strongly and equalised through Akor Adams eight minutes before half-time.

However, Francisco Conceição came off the bench to score the winning goal for Portugal 15 minutes before full-time.

Reacting after the match, Martinez described the encounter as a difficult test for his side.

He said:

“It was a fantastic test, the opponent was demanding, from a different culture, we don’t usually play against African teams.

“I think today we had an opponent with players who have a lot of physical ability and use attacking movements very well, without needing much combination to get into the area.”

Martinez added that the game provided valuable preparation for Portugal ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
