Group Protests Sachet Alcohol Ban, Calls for Review of NAFDAC Leadership
Members of the Rebirth Nigeria Movement on Thursday staged a protest demanding the immediate removal of the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, over the enforcement of a ban on sachet and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic beverages.
The protest, led by the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Okwute Hilary Akor, took place in Abuja, where demonstrators accused the NAFDAC boss of gross incompetence and abuse of public office in relation to the agency’s implementation of the alcohol policy.
Addressing journalists, Akor said the group was “startled” by what it described as the “illegal enforcement of an arbitrary ban” on sachet alcohol and small PET bottle products.
He argued that the action contradicts existing provisions of the National Alcohol Policy signed by the Federal Ministry of Health and allegedly disregards a presidential directive halting further disruption of affected businesses pending the outcome of a joint committee review.
According to him, the enforcement also runs contrary to resolutions of the House of Representatives referenced in a 2024 communication, which he claimed restrained the agency from proceeding with the ban after a public hearing with stakeholders.
The group warned that the decision could negatively impact businesses and jobs across the alcohol production value chain, especially at a time when the Federal Government is promoting economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Akor maintained that sachet and small-bottle alcoholic products were introduced to cater to low-income adult consumers and argued that banning them would restrict consumer choice and threaten the survival of local manufacturers.
He further contended that industry operators had invested heavily in campaigns promoting responsible drinking and discouraging underage consumption.
While acknowledging the need for regulatory oversight to eliminate unsafe products, the movement insisted that policy decisions should be guided by empirical evidence and broad stakeholder consultations.
The protesters said they had formally presented their concerns to the Senate and expressed confidence that lawmakers would revisit the issue.
They urged President Tinubu to relieve the NAFDAC Director-General of her duties, arguing that her continued stay in office was no longer in the public interest.
As of press time, NAFDAC had not issued an official response to the protest.

BREAKING: Joint DSS-Army Team Foil Planned Attacks, Kidnap By ESN In Southeast
*Recover high-calibre arms cache, ammunition
The Department of State Services (DSS), backed by troops of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, on Wednesday foiled plans by members of the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN) to attack several security checkpoints, kidnap women, students and children across the Southeast states.
A security source disclosed that, acting on intelligence acquired by the DSS, two ESN field commanders coordinating the planned attacks were apprehended on Monday in Garki, Enugu State.
The source further revealed that, based on the leads supplied by the nabbed ESN commanders, DSS sought the backing of troops from 82 Division, and executed a covert operation. The operation led to the raids by DSS officers and soldiers on Tuesday and Wednesday on an ESN armoury in the Agbani axis of Enugu State.
The raids, disclosed the source, led to the recovery of a cache of high-calibre arms, namely a rocket launcher, two RPG (rocket propelled grenade) warheads, three RPG chargers, and 11 AK-47 rifles.
18 AK-47 magazines, 1,071 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two handheld grenades, one teargas gun, a baton and two teargas canisters were recovered.
The raids also led to the recovery of one smoke grenade launcher, two teargas canisters, 10 NYSC trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts and four NYSC lanyards. The source disclosed that intelligence revealed that the ESN members were to have used the NYSC uniforms as a cover to launch the attacks.
Intelligence gathered from the arrested ESN field commanders, , according to another source, revealed that members of the terrorist organization were to have launched massive attacks across the Southeast states, kidnap women, students and children, spread fear and create the impression that the region has been overtaken by insecurity.
The Enugu recoveries came barely a week after DSS operatives arrested five suspected arms couriers linked to the gunmen who abducted students and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State, on November 21, 2025.
The suspects, including two Nigeriens, were nabbed in coordinated operations across Kaduna, Niger and Kebbi states. Recovered from the men were 15 AK 103 rifles, 15 magazines and 1,434 rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition.
The outlawed group has been responsible for series of kidnappings and attacks on security operatives in the Southeast, declared the source.
The raids on ESN armoury in Enugu State came shortly after a recent arrest by the DSS of several suspected members of the outlawed organization in the state.

Defamation Claims: Obi Demands N5bn From Okonkwo
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has demanded ₦5 billion in damages and a public apology from actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory remarks made during a live television interview.
The Allegations
Obi’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Alex Ejesieme, issued a letter dated June 9, 2026, accusing Okonkwo of making false and damaging claims during Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on June 8.
According to the letter, Okonkwo alleged that Obi and NDC leaders in the South-East demanded ₦10 million bribes from aspirants seeking House of Representatives tickets. He further claimed Obi personally compiled candidate lists from a hotel room, warned aspirants of scams, collected money from Nigerians abroad, and engaged in criminal activities with party leaders.
The lawyers argued that these statements portrayed Obi as corrupt, dishonest, and criminally inclined. They described the allegations as “false, baseless, malicious, reckless, defamatory and wholly unsupported by any fact.”
Legal Demands
Obi’s lawyers demanded that Okonkwo retract the statements within seven days, issue an “unequivocal and unreserved” public apology, and ensure the apology receives equal or greater publicity than the original remarks.
They also requested ₦5 billion in damages for reputational harm and a written undertaking from Okonkwo to desist from further defamatory comments.
The letter warned that failure to comply would leave Obi with no choice but to pursue legal redress, including claims for damages, injunctions, public retractions, and legal costs.
Okonkwo’s Response
Kenneth Okonkwo dismissed the demand in a post on his X handle, mocking Obi’s request. He described Obi as a “hypocrite” and suggested the demand was an attempt at extortion.
“If Peter Obi is looking for money to campaign, he should privately ask me for assistance, not come from extortion, and I will help him,” Okonkwo wrote.
He added that he had not yet read the letter but would respond formally after reviewing it. “It will be a shame to Peter Obi and his lawyers if they do not take this case to court. I don’t have time or patience for scammers,” he stated.
Okonkwo also warned that any lawsuit could expose information he obtained while serving as Obi’s spokesperson during the 2023 election campaign. “Anyone who decides to sue his former spokesperson for defamation is indeed very unwise,” he added.
Implications
The dispute highlights growing tensions within the political space as Nigeria approaches another election cycle. Obi, who has built his reputation on integrity and transparency, views the allegations as a direct attack on his public image.
Legal experts note that defamation suits involving political figures often test the boundaries between free speech and reputational protection. If Obi proceeds with litigation, the case could set a precedent for how Nigerian courts handle politically charged defamation claims.
For Okonkwo, the confrontation may revive scrutiny of his role as a former spokesperson and his transition from Nollywood actor to political commentator. His defiant response suggests he is prepared for a legal battle, one that could expose internal party dealings if pursued in court.
What Comes Next
Obi’s legal team has given Okonkwo seven days to comply with the demands. If he refuses, the matter is expected to move to the courts, where both sides will present evidence.
The case could dominate headlines in the coming weeks, especially given Obi’s prominence as a presidential candidate and Okonkwo’s visibility as a public figure.
