Nigerian rapper and singer YCee has spoken candidly about his mental health journey, revealing that he was diagnosed with a mental health condition in 2020.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, the Omo Alhaji hitmaker explained that the diagnosis came during the COVID-19 lockdown and played a major role in his break from the music industry.

According to YCee, he spent six months in London and was repeatedly admitted to hospital for about three months while receiving treatment.

He said:

“In 2020, I got diagnosed with a mental health condition during the lockdown. I was in London for six months and was in-and-out of hospital for about three months.”

The rapper revealed that he later returned to Nigeria to continue his treatment because of visa restrictions in the United Kingdom.

He described the experience of navigating mental health care in Nigeria as a long and difficult journey that lasted several years.

In his words:

“I had to return to Nigeria to continue treatment because of the type of Visa I was on. Coming back to Lagos and getting into the system of mental health in Nigeria, it was a very very long six years. I was on medication and had to be hospitalised several times and still dealing with therapies.

“It was up and down. Sometimes it is looking good and sometimes, it just gets really dark.”

Despite the challenges, YCee said he has made significant progress and is now stable following years of treatment, medication, and therapy.

His revelation sheds light on the realities of living with mental health conditions and highlights the importance of seeking professional help and ongoing support during recovery.
