Eyiyemi Afolayan, daughter of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, has explained why she would rather marry a poor man than a wealthy one.

Speaking during an interview with the BBC, the young actress shared her views on relationships, marriage, money and family life.

According to Eyiyemi, she believes wealth can sometimes influence people’s behavior in relationships. She said she prefers a man who is hardworking and independent rather than someone whose financial status could affect his commitment.

She also made it clear that she is not interested in building a man from scratch financially.

She said:

“I can’t build with a man. Why can’t I build with a man? You know men; they are ingrates.”

She added that although she would not want to be solely responsible for taking care of her husband, she has no problem supporting a man who is already working hard.

“If I marry a man who doesn’t have money and see money, if I marry him, he will stay with me, not because he loves me, but because he doesn’t have the money to flirt around.”

Eyiyemi noted that she was raised in a wealthy family and expects any man who wants to marry her to already have something meaningful doing.

“I was born into wealth. Any man who wants to marry me must be doing something for himself. I can’t be feeding him, but I can support him.”

The actress also ruled out becoming a second or third wife, saying she does not believe in polygamy because it often comes with unnecessary problems.

“I can’t be a second or third wife for any man. It is not because I am jealous or anything. A polygamous home comes with a lot of troubles.”

Despite her personal opinions, Eyiyemi said she respects whatever choices her father makes in his own life and believes he should be free to live as he wishes. She added that she and her siblings will continue to support him regardless of his decisions.
