It Makes No Sense To Compare Ghana’s Movie Industry To Nigeria’s – Majid Michel

Veteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has described comparisons between Ghana’s movie industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood as unfair, arguing that Nigeria’s much larger population gives it a natural advantage.

Michel made the remarks during a recent interview with Y1079 FM Accra, where he explained that Nigeria’s population makes it more likely to have a larger number of actors, filmmakers and other professionals than Ghana.

He described the comparison between the two movie industries as “stupid,” insisting that the countries have different population sizes and should not be judged by the same standards.

According to the actor, Nigeria’s population of more than 200 million, compared with Ghana’s population of fewer than 40 million, makes the difference in the size of their entertainment industries understandable.

He said:

“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me. If you have 50 children and I have 5 children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children and filmmakers than me is very high.

“We are less than 40 million in Ghana. Nigeria is over 200 million, almost 300 million. So how on earth would you compare?

“Why do they have more doctors than us? Mathematically, you should know why. So if Nigeria has more filmmakers than us, it only makes sense because they are way more than us.”

Michel also extended his argument beyond the movie industry, saying Ghana should not compare itself with more established nations in terms of leadership and development.

He argued that some countries have spent more than 300 years building their leadership structures and institutions, while Ghana still has considerable progress to make.

He added:

“It is also unfair for us to compare ourselves with any other established nation in the world. When it comes to leadership, we are adolescent.

“There are countries that have been in leadership for over 300 years. They have built systems. We are way behind. So it is an unfair comparison.”
