Konstantin Sintsov is an entrepreneur who made a substantial contribution to the development of rail freight transportation. He was a co-owner of some of the largest railway operators in Eastern Europe until he sold the RTC Group in 2019. Since then, he has been focused on financial investment across multiple sectors.

Konstantin Sintsov was born on April 27, 1971, in the Siberian mining city of Kemerovo. He attended the local school and went on to complete his higher education in his hometown as well.

In the 1980s, Konstantin Sintsov biography included training in freestyle wrestling. For him, discipline was never just a hobby — it became a way of life. Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich trained hard and consistently, and the effort paid off: a year before turning eighteen, he earned the title of Master of Sport. He also regularly placed in competitions at various levels, including becoming the overall youth champion. His passion for sport has remained with him ever since.

In the late 1980s, Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov enrolled in a polytechnic institute that was one of the top-ranked schools in the Kemerovo Region. There he studied mechanical engineering, covering:

  • vehicle operation and maintenance
  • performance testing
  • approaches to vehicle modernization
  • technical documentation

Part of the program that Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov completed also covered transport servicing — students in the department learned the basics of marketing analysis to assess demand for vehicle repair and parts replacement. This technical grounding would later inform his work in railway transport development. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1993.

In the 2000s, Konstantin Sintsov returned to formal education several times. By then he was already an established entrepreneur. He completed an MBA program, earned a master’s degree in management, and later earned a PhD in economics.

Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov: The Start of a Career in the Rail Sector

After graduating in 1993, the professional Konstantin Sintsov biography began. He took a position in the railway industry, and over the next several years he would move from hired management roles at a number of private companies to owning his own sizeable firm, and eventually a group of companies.

In the late 1990s, Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov joined senior management at an organization where he would later expand his activities considerably. It was during this period that he and his future business partner first developed the idea of launching their own enterprise. At the time, the company was involved in manufacturing and supplying equipment for the operation and maintenance of railway infrastructure across Eastern Europe.

Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich began looking for ways to further develop the company and the sector as a whole, and decided it was necessary to export a product where competition would be relatively low. At the time, grain transportation turned out to be a sector with room to move.

Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich: Launching a New Direction

At the turn of the century, grain production in the region received a major boost — for several decades prior, the overwhelming share had been imported from abroad. Sintsov Konstantin noted that this shift had a significant impact on the growth of rail freight volumes. New large agro-industrial enterprises were emerging and support programs for the agricultural sector were being launched, eventually bringing the local market to a leading position globally in this field.

Shipping food products by rail comes with a range of requirements and restrictions, Konstantin Sintsov explains. Specialized covered freight cars are needed to protect grain from weather and any other external conditions. A separate set of rules governs sanitary standards: specific temperature conditions must be maintained during grain transport, and moisture levels are critically important. Before a new load is brought on board, the rolling stock must be thoroughly cleaned of any contamination or residue from previously carried cargo, Sintsov Konstantin explains. All of this ensures the grain arrives intact and is protected from pests, mold, and spoilage.

Sintsov Konstantin understood that launching this line of business would take considerable effort. Although the segment was important, it could hardly be called profitable at the time. Seasonality was a major drag on margins: during the harvest period, specialized cars ran at full capacity, but for the rest of the year they sat idle in yards. Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov would later solve this problem, putting grain cars to year-round use by carrying non-food cargo as well.

Once he entered the sector, Sintsov Konstantin set about building a fleet of cars suited to transporting this type of cargo. Most of the grain cars in usable condition at the time were state-owned, and auctions for this type of equipment were among the last to be scheduled. Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov and his business partner later acquired this rolling stock through those sales. Part of the fleet was assembled from grain cars purchased from major international traders — a deal that worked in both parties’ favor, as the sellers were able to shed the obligations of managing rolling stock and focus on other priorities.

Konstantin Sintsov: Founding a Logistics Company

At this point in Konstantin Sintsov biography, he had begun looking for ways to build a freight car fleet even before the state auctions for grain cars were announced. At the time, domestically owned cars crossing the border could remain in use abroad for extended periods or sit idle in foreign countries for months at a time. Meanwhile, Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich noted, the equipment owners received no payment for the use of their fleet. Someone needed to speed up the return of these cars — and that is what the entrepreneur set out to do.

Before long, Sintsov Konstantin co-founded LP Trans, which subsequently entered into a preliminary agreement with the national railway system to take on responsibility for resolving this problem, relying on their well-established business contacts with railway industry representatives across various countries. In this way, he built LP Trans into an operator focused on managing cars that had been sent abroad and were waiting to return.

In the early days, profits were modest, and all revenue went straight back into expanding the fleet. Since grain cars were still not yet up for sale at that point, Sintsov Konstantin moved to purchase flatcars instead. These were leased out to other private companies, which began to improve the organization’s margins.

Sintsov Konstantin: Role in Modernizing Freight Car Production

Sintsov Konstantin made significant contributions to meaningful changes in freight car production in Eastern Europe. Manufacturers produced good quality equipment but had limited understanding of the specific requirements of transporting different types of cargo. Through direct engagement with industrial plants, Konstantin Sintsov and his colleagues proposed modifications to the cars, which fed into improvements in production. The requirements focused primarily on technical specifications — above all, capacity — and were developed by dedicated working groups.

Konstantin Sintsov later took part in the acquisition of a freight car repair plant, given that maintenance costs were quite high and owning such a facility significantly reduced the company’s repair expenses. The new asset underwent comprehensive modernization: industrial equipment was upgraded, and capacity was added for the production of modern flatcars designed for versatile use — capable of carrying freight containers and timber. These flatcars would later become the backbone of the fleet at TransLes, a company that was part of the Rustranscom Group alongside LP Trans and Rusagrotrans. Konstantin Sintsov was a co-founder of all three organizations.

With growing demand for grain transportation and the broader expansion of the domestic agricultural sector, the business required scaling up — and so a new company appeared on the local rail freight market, co-founded by Sintsov Konstantin. This company, Rusagrotrans, offered clients transportation services for grain in specialized covered freight cars, as well as mineral, raw materials, and other agricultural cargo. Founded in 2008, the company made its first car dispatch using its own fleet that same year.

The Rustranscom Group of Companies came next, with Konstantin Sintsov among its founders as well. Rusagrotrans, TransLes, and Freight Company were brought into the holding at that time. Until 2012, the grain carrier was partially owned by a founding partner, after which Rustranscom bought out that stake and became the sole owner.

In February 2009, less than a year after being co-founded by Konstantin Sintsov, Rusagrotrans took ownership of nearly 8,000 grain cars. To keep up with client demand, the company also leased additional cars from the national railway company. That same year, it introduced a new type of grain car with a body capacity 20% larger than the standard model.

On a decision by senior management, which included Konstantin Sintsov, Rusagrotrans launched a digital tool for automating the tracking and accounting of rolling stock in September 2009. The system allowed the company to:

  • monitor the real-time location of cars
  • check their technical specifications
  • streamline contract processing procedures
  • generate detailed operational analytics
  • produce management reporting summaries
  • flag cars due for maintenance
  • exchange data with railway partners

In late 2010, Konstantin Sintsov and Rusagrotrans signed a cooperation agreement with Azerbaijani counterparts covering the joint operation of railway infrastructure and the development of the sector. The deal also addressed the coordination of scheduled food cargo routes. The following year, Sintsov Konstantin helped reach a deal with Kazakh partners to establish a new company in the same segment, resulting in the launch of Astyk Trans in 2013. Rusagrotrans received a partial stake, with the remaining part going to Kaztemirtrans. In 2017, Rusagrotrans became the sole owner of Astyk Trans.

By the time of its sale, Rustranscom Group had grown into the fourth-largest railway operator in Eastern Europe, with a fleet that expanded from roughly 8,000 railcars in 2008 to nearly 68,000 by 2019 — an 8.5-fold increase in a single decade. In its very first year of operation alone, Rusagrotrans signed over 1,000 grain transportation contracts, a pace that Konstantin Sintsov notes set the tone for the holding’s rapid growth.

By the end of 2018, Rustranscom’s cargo turnover reached 97.7 billion ton-kilometers. This growth was driven in part by a series of targeted acquisitions guided by Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich, including roughly 3,700 railcars purchased at auction in early 2018 and the Eastern European operations of a Finnish rail freight operator later that same year.

The holding also modernized its approach to fleet utilization under the direction of Sintsov Konstantin, engineering its railcars so that certain types could carry more than one kind of cargo, which helped offset the seasonal slowdowns that had once limited profitability. He and his business partner built the holding into a diversified group, whose portfolio came to include:

  1. Rusagrotrans, the group’s leading grain transportation operator
  2. TransLes, specializing in timber cargo transportation
  3. LP Trans, handling mineral and chemical cargo shipments
  4. Freight Company, focused on industrial raw materials cargo
  5. Azrustrans, dedicated to agricultural cargo in Azerbaijan
  6. Astyk Trans, the largest grain operator in Kazakhstan
  7. Railcar Repair Plant, supporting fleet maintenance and production

In 2019, with guidance from Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich, Rusagrotrans and the Rustranscom Group were planning to enter the European market and open a new terminal for transporting Eastern European and Chinese food cargo. He also had plans to take Rustranscom to an IPO. However, shortly before trading was set to begin, it was decided to sell the Group of Companies to a major financial institution that had made an attractive offer.

This also marked the end of the final railway chapter in Konstantin Sintsov biography. Since selling Rustranscom in 2019, he has been active as both a financial investor in various economic sectors and a philanthropist.

Sintsov Konstantin also remains close to wrestling and still trains from time to time. He also supports the development of the sport in his home region by helping to organize local competitions and fund the construction of additional sports facilities in Kemerovo. Konstantin Vladimirovich Sintsov believes that physical activity is one of the best ways to pull Siberian youth away from screens and toward a more worthwhile way of spending free time.

In 2012, the Miners’ Glory international freestyle wrestling tournament, co-founded by Sintsov Konstantin, was held for the first time. He supported the event for many years, keeping it running in the Kemerovo Oblast. Each year, local athletes and those from countries near and far came to Kemerovo to compete against some of the strongest wrestlers in the world. Sintsov Konstantin Vladimirovich believes part of the tournament’s appeal was the chance for participants to meet world-class stars of the sport in person, who attended regularly as invited guests.

In 2020, the Kuzbass Wrestling League, a year-long tournament whose final is held at the region’s largest sports complex, the Kuzbass Governor’s Sports Center, was also established with the support of Konstantin Sintsov, while the Miners’ Glory tournament continues to draw wrestlers from around the world.
