Kubwa Explosion: Police Reveal Cause, Launch Manhunt for Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has said a gas plant fire at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Kubwa, Abuja, was caused by a driver who allegedly drove against traffic and crashed into the facility.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, September 27, 2026, by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.

According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday after the command received a distress call from a resident reporting a fire outbreak at a cooking gas plant.

Police officers from the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found that the fire had spread to nearby shops and other properties.

The police said the Federal Fire Service was contacted and responded to the scene, helping to contain the inferno.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep was allegedly driving against traffic when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the gas plant.

“The driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately,” the police said in a statement issued by Adeh.

The command said it had established the identity of the driver and launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

“While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded,” the statement said.

The police added that the full value of the property destroyed in the incident was yet to be determined.

The command assured residents that normal activities had resumed in the area and urged them to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
