Lionel Messi Reveals Major Regret In His Career
Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has revealed that one of his biggest regrets is not learning English when he was younger. The Inter Miami forward admitted that he had enough time to study the language but failed to take advantage of the opportunity.
Messi spent more than two decades at Barcelona before moving to Paris Saint-Germain and eventually joining Inter Miami. Despite his success at the highest level of football, the 39-year-old says his inability to speak English has sometimes limited his interactions with other prominent personalities.
“I regret many things. To not have learned English as a boy. I had the time to have at least studied English and I didn’t do it. I deeply regret it,” Messi said.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner explained that he had encountered situations where he met remarkable people but struggled to communicate with them because of the language barrier.
“I experienced situations where I was with incredible and spectacular personalities to be able to talk and have a chat and you feel half ignorant,” he said.
Messi admitted that he sometimes looks back on those missed opportunities with frustration. “I always thought: ‘What an idiot, how I wasted my time,’” he added.
The Argentine star said his experience has influenced the advice he gives his children, particularly about education and preparing for the future. He believes young people should make good use of the opportunities available to them.
“When you’re young, you don’t realise it. Today that’s what I tell my children, having a good education, to study and be prepared,” Messi stated.

He further encouraged his children to take their education seriously, explaining that they have different opportunities from those he had growing up. “I always tell my children to take advantage of it. They have a different situation to the one I had although I never lacked anything,” he said.
