Argentina’s new captain, Cristian Romero, has revealed that Lionel Messi personally chose him to take over the captaincy of the national team.

Romero made the revelation during an interview with Adidas Football’s communications department, where he also spoke about his admiration for the 39-year-old Argentina legend.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender said he has no regrets about the way he has shown his affection and respect for Messi, who is scheduled to play his final match for Argentina in the coming week.

“He chose me to be captain, and that’s something beautiful. My way of showing love is pretty rough, but I told him I regret not showing him all the love I always had for him,” Romero said.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez also spoke about Messi during the Adidas Football interview, praising the influence the Argentina captain has had on his teammates and the country.

“Leo did not merely unite the players within the national squad. He unified an entire nation. This constitutes the legacy he bequeaths,” Martinez said.
