Nigerian artistes can’t make serious money from music unless they’ve international hit – Magixx
Afrobeats singer Magixx has said Nigerian artistes are unlikely to make substantial money from music without releasing songs that achieve international success.
Speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Magixx explained that artistes must consistently release hit songs after their first major success to maintain financial stability.
He disclosed that even after being signed to Mavin Records by Don Jazzy, it took him between two and three months to start earning money from music.
According to the singer, performance fees are also influenced by the number of hit songs an artiste has, with successful releases helping performers command higher payments.
“Even when you get signed to a big record label as an artist, you first have to drop a song with international appeal before you start making serious money. It took 2–3 months after Don Jazzy signed me before I started earning from music,” he stated.
Magixx revealed that he struggled with bills and family responsibilities before the money started coming in. He said people often assumed he had no financial problems because he was signed to a major record label.

He also explained that maintaining the lifestyle expected of a superstar, including purchasing expensive designer clothes, added to his financial difficulties. However, he said his earnings eventually improved, noting that one hit song could earn an artiste between N500,000 and N700,000 per show, while another hit could raise the performance fee to N1.5 million.
