Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has said she is stepping back from speaking out on national issues following the criticism she received over her recent comments on governance and political corruption.

The actress had earlier criticized what she described as the problem of double taxation, arguing that many Nigerians pay taxes but are still forced to provide basic amenities for themselves while public funds are allegedly mismanaged.

She wrote:

“So after they work hard to earn and then pay their taxes, they should help the government to provide a better life for the masses. While the tax collected is meant for some family members. This country has stretched my mental health to its limits.”

Her remarks sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users supporting her views and others criticizing her.

Responding to the backlash, Jegede expressed disappointment, saying the negative reactions have made her understand why many public figures choose to remain silent during national crises.

According to the actress, she has always believed in speaking up whenever she sees injustice, but feels discouraged by the response she receives from the public.

She wrote:

“The more I speak of the uncommon things I see happening in my country, the more people drag me. I see why people stay quiet in times of crisis. I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon, but you see Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry is the order of the day.”

Her comments have generated fresh debate online, with some Nigerians agreeing that public criticism often discourages people from speaking out, while others disagreed with her conclusion about the public.
