Afrobeats singer Mr Real has raised concerns over allegations that some Nigerians are hiring people to spray money at parties to pressure other guests into spraying money.

The singer made the allegation in a video shared on his Instagram page, warning Nigerians not to believe everything they see on social media or at events.

Mr Real explained that the hired “money sprayers” and the event hosts allegedly share the money collected from other guests, while the original amount sprayed is returned to those hired.

He said the practice was brought to his attention following an altercation at a hotel where he recently lodged in Abuja.

“Some Nigerians now rent people to spray money at their parties. What sort of business is that? Let me break it down for you. It is crazy. Don’t believe everything you see on social media or at events,” he said.

Recounting the incident, the singer said he went to investigate a disturbance at the hotel and encountered someone he knew, who later explained what had happened.

“A chaos broke out at night in a hotel I lodged in recently in Abuja. So, I went up to check what was happening. I saw someone I knew and asked him, but he said we should go to my hotel room because he couldn’t discuss it outside. When we got to my hotel room, he told me that the boys involved in the altercation are called ‘money sprayers’,” he recounted.

According to Mr Real, the individuals are hired to spray money at events to create the impression that guests are spending lavishly, thereby encouraging others to do the same.

“What they do is that people rent them to spray money at their events to pressure guests into spraying. The amount they spray at an event depends on their agreement with the host. They also spray dollars.

“At the end of the event, the hosts will return the money they sprayed to them. They also get 10 to 15 per cent of the money the other guests sprayed, depending on the agreement.”

Mr Real further claimed that the altercation at the Abuja hotel started after the host allegedly discovered counterfeit $800 among the money sprayed at the event.

He said the host accused the hired money sprayers of introducing the counterfeit notes, but they denied responsibility and suggested that the money could have come from the celebrant’s friends.

Expressing shock over the alleged practice, the singer warned that people could feel pressured to spend money at parties after seeing what they believe to be genuine displays of wealth.

“I was shocked to discover that there is a business like that. People will be feeling pressured watching others spraying money, not knowing that it was staged. My guy also told me that ‘money sprayers’ are rampant in Lagos, too, especially Lekki,” he added.
