NMS 95 Reunion Ends in Tragedy as 2 Members Die, 3 Injured in Road Crash

What was meant to be a joyous silver jubilee reunion for members of the Nigerian Military School (NMS) 95 Set ended in heartbreak after a fatal road accident claimed the lives of two ex-students and left three others injured while travelling to Zaria for the event.

The deceased, Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji and Nura Abubakar, were among members of the NMS 95 Set heading to the Nigerian Military School in Zaria to participate in activities marking their 25th anniversary reunion and witness the Passing Out Parade of graduating students.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday when the bus conveying some members of the set was involved in a road traffic accident. Three other members sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the National President of the NMS Ex-Boys Association, Mohammed Baba Marte, described the tragedy as one of the darkest moments in the history of the association.

Today is one of the darkest days in the history of our Association. With an extremely heavy heart, I announce the passing of two of our dear brothers, Ex-Boy Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji and Ex-Boy Nura Abubakar,” he said.

Marte noted that the two deceased were committed members of the association whose contributions to the Nigerian Military School community would remain unforgettable.

This is not merely the loss of two Ex-Boys; it is the loss of two committed patriots whose lives were dedicated to service, brotherhood and the advancement of our alma mater,” he added.

Dr. Bebeji, who served as the National Director of Socials and Welfare of the association, was also the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He had previously served on the Kaduna State Chapter Executive Committee and was the Secretary-General of the NMS 95 Set.

Widely regarded as a respected legal scholar and mentor, Bebeji devoted much of his time to mentoring younger students of the Nigerian Military School through career talks, leadership programmes and academic development initiatives. He had also been scheduled to participate in the induction ceremony for the graduating students before his untimely death.

The association also mourned the passing of Nura Abubakar, describing him as a loyal and dedicated member whose death has further deepened the grief of the NMS family.

The silver jubilee celebration had commenced in Kaduna a day earlier and was expected to culminate in the reunion and Annual General Meeting after the Passing Out Parade at the Nigerian Military School. Instead, the celebrations turned into a period of mourning following the fatal accident.

The NMS Ex-Boys Association extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, members of the NMS 95 Set, the management and staff of Ahmadu Bello University, the Nigerian Military School community and ex-boys across the world.

The association also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured members receiving treatment.

The remains of Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji were laid to rest in Kaduna on Saturday following funeral prayers held at the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi Mosque in Tudun Wada. Funeral arrangements for Nura Abubakar were held in Zamfara immediately by his family.

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the NMS community, with tributes pouring in for the two ex-boys whose lives of service, leadership and commitment to their alma mater ended while on a journey to celebrate the enduring bond of brotherhood they had shared for 25 years.
