Pandemonium In Rivers Varsity As Gunshots Throw Students Into Panic

There was pandemonium at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State on Monday after gunshots caused panic among students and members of the university community.

Reports had alleged that the incident was linked to a clash between two rival cult groups, Vikings and Black Axe, within the university.

The shooting was said to have lasted for more than 20 minutes, raising concerns among students and other members of the institution.

A video clip seen  showed some persons believed to be students fleeing the university premises amid the tension.

However, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of the university, Comrade Alex Onu, dismissed reports that suspected cultists were involved in a gun battle inside the institution.

Onu confirmed that operatives of the Rivers State Police Command fired shots to disperse some unknown persons who had entered the university during the ongoing SUG Week celebration.

According to the SUG president, the unknown persons were believed to have been attracted to the institution by the SUG Week activities.

He explained that the individuals did not engage the police in any confrontation and immediately left the university premises after the police fired shots into the air.
