Police Inspector Killed As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Checkpoint In Benue

A police inspector has been killed after suspected armed herdsmen attacked a security checkpoint at Ayilamo in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack reportedly occurred when suspected armed herdsmen opened fire on the checkpoint, prompting troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) and a mobile police team to respond to the incident.

The attackers reportedly fled into nearby bushes after sighting the security personnel who arrived at the scene.

Following the attack, the troops and police operatives launched a follow-up operation around Ayilamo to track the fleeing suspects and restore calm in the area.

During the operation, the security personnel recovered the body of a police inspector who was killed in the attack.

The remains of the police officer were taken to the Ayilamo Hospital mortuary, where they were deposited for autopsy and other necessary procedures.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the security situation in Logo Local Government Area and other parts of Benue State, where rural communities and security checkpoints have continued to face attacks by suspected armed groups.

Security authorities said the latest attack further highlights the security challenges confronting communities in parts of Benue State.

Following the incident, military personnel have intensified patrols and surveillance around Uzer, Ayilamo and other border areas of Logo LGA.

The security agencies are also continuing efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack and prevent further attacks on security personnel and residents in the area.

Residents of Ayilamo, Uzer and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, could not be reached for confirmation as of press time, as calls to his mobile phones went unanswered.
