Police Rescue Stolen Newborn, Arrest 11 Suspects In Benue

The Benue State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby reportedly stolen shortly after delivery at a healthcare facility in Gboko, Gboko Local Government Area of the state.

The police also arrested 11 suspects in connection with the incident.

The command’s spokesperson, Orchia Aondogwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.

Aondogwu said that on August 12, 2026, at about 11 a.m., operatives attached to A Division, Gboko, received a complaint from Aondofa Chia that his wife had delivered a baby at a healthcare facility in Gboko but the newborn went missing shortly after birth.

Following the report, police operatives immediately launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of nine suspects for questioning and to assist in determining the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance.

The police spokesman said further investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects at about 10 p.m. on the same day.

Among those arrested was the principal suspect, Mrs Nguhemen Asugh, 35, who allegedly stole the newborn.

The baby was subsequently rescued from Asugh’s custody and safely reunited with the mother.

Aondogwu said all 11 suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

He added that the investigation is aimed at establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident, determining the roles played by each suspect and ascertaining their individual levels of culpability.
