PSG Defeat Aston Villa to Retain Super Cup Trophy

French champions Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.

The reigning UEFA Champions League winners were tested by the Europa League holders but PSG proved too good with clinical finishing and Aston Villa’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

The match was also historic as African referee Omar Artan became the first non-European match official to officiate the curtain-raiser to the 2026/27 European club football season. Artan had been detained for hours and denied entry at the US border before the 2026 World Cup, with UEFA selecting the Somali referee in what appeared to be a protest against US officials’ treatment of him.

PSG retained their Champions League crown as holders and faced Aston Villa who were making their first Super Cup appearance. The Parisiens twice went ahead with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, with Brian Madjo leveling for Unai Emery’s side in between.

Kvaratskhelia, voted the Champions League’s player of the season, controlled the pass from Doue and finished ruthlessly into the top corner of the near post in the 22nd. Aston Villa fought their way back into the contest and came close thru Victor Lindelof and Madjo before the latter made his fourth chance count.

The teenager clinically finished under pressure at the far post in the 45th minute to equalize. The 17-year-old became the youngest ever goalscorer in Super Cup history with a strike on his debut for Aston Villa. Villa almost equalized again in the first minutes of the second half thru captain John McGinn but PSG regrouped and regained control.

Doue beat the offside trap to get onto Ousmane Dembele’s pass and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom far corner in the 61st minute. There was to be no late rally from Villa, and PSG clung on for back-to-back Super Cup triumphs under Luis Enrique, becoming only the fourth club to do so.

Victory means PSG have now won nine of the 11 available trophies in France and Europe and Unai Emery suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in the Super Cup.
