Religious Leaders Benefiting From Nigeria’s Hardship, Insecurity — Spyro

Nigerian singer Spyro has sparked debate after claiming that religious leaders are among the biggest beneficiaries of Nigeria’s insecurity and economic challenges.

Speaking during a recent interview on Wazobia FM Lagos, the Who’s Your Guy crooner argued that many clerics have failed to speak out strongly against the country’s worsening conditions because they benefit from them.

According to Spyro, religious leaders have a responsibility to address issues affecting their congregations, including insecurity and governance.

He urged clerics to educate their followers on safety measures and provide proper guidance on electoral participation and civic responsibility.

In his words:

“Nigerian religious leaders should speak up against insecurity. They should tell the people how to secure themselves and include the issue of insecurity in their sermons. They should also give their congregants proper electoral orientations.”

The singer, however, alleged that many religious leaders remain silent because the country’s struggles work in their favour.

He said:

“Unfortunately, they are not doing that because the more the country is spoiling, the more money they make.

“Anywhere there is a crisis in a country, the people who benefit the most are religious leaders.

“We should make sure we hold all our leaders, including clerics, accountable.”

Spyro’s comments have generated reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that religious leaders should play a more active role in addressing national issues, while others disagree with his claim that clerics benefit from the country’s hardships.
