Ronald Araujo has officially been handed the No. 33 shirt at Liverpool after completing his move from Barcelona on a season-long loan.

The 27-year-old defender arrived in Merseyside on Sunday and has already completed his medical tests ahead of joining the Premier League champions.

The deal between Liverpool and Barcelona also includes an option for the Reds to make Araujo’s transfer permanent.

Speaking about the move, Araujo said it was the right decision for his career at this stage.

“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take.

“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly,” he said.

Araujo leaves Barcelona after spending eight years with the Spanish club. His departure came after manager Hansi Flick was unable to guarantee him enough playing time during the new season.

The Uruguay international is expected to provide additional cover in Liverpool’s defence following an injury to Joe Gomez during pre-season.

Teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is also still recovering from an ACL injury, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature for the Reds.
