UCL: Two Lionel Messi Records Broken By Erling Haaland Against PSG
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has reportedly broken two of Lionel Messi’s UEFA Champions League records despite his team’s 4-2 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
PSG dominated the first half at the Etihad Stadium, with Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé scoring in the 13th and 15th minutes. Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute to give the visitors a commanding advantage at half-time.
Haaland reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, but Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal lead in the 62nd minute. The Norwegian struck again in the 75th minute, although City were unable to complete their comeback.
Despite the defeat, Haaland made history by becoming the fastest player to score 60 Champions League goals, reaching the milestone in just 60 appearances. He surpassed Messi’s previous record of 80 matches.
The 26-year-old also reportedly became the youngest player to reach 60 goals in the competition, achieving the feat at 26 years and 85 days, one day younger than Messi was when he reached the same milestone.
Haaland had previously set the record for the fastest player to score 50 Champions League goals, reaching the mark in 49 appearances and surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s previous record of 62 matches.
