World Cup 2026: ‘It’ll Be Difficult’ – Argentina Coach Scaloni Speaks On Winning Trophy Again
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has admitted that defending the FIFA World Cup title will be a difficult task as his team prepares to begin their campaign.
La Albiceleste are set to start their title defence against Algeria on June 17.
Argentina won their third World Cup title just over three and a half years ago after defeating France on penalties in the 2022 final in Qatar.
Since that triumph, Scaloni’s side has recorded only four defeats across international friendlies, the 2024 Copa America, and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
They have also won their last five matches, including a dominant 3-0 victory over Iceland in their most recent warm-up game.
Their strong run of form ahead of the tournament has placed them at the top of the latest FIFA rankings.
Speaking after the friendly against Iceland, Scaloni said winning back-to-back World Cups would not be easy, but assured that his players would give their maximum effort.
He said:
“It is quite challenging to claim that we will win the World Cup again, as it is very difficult; however, I can assure you that these players will give their all on the pitch. We will strive until the very end.”
Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan as they aim to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups.
According to Opta’s latest forecast, Argentina are currently the fourth favourites to win the tournament, with a 10.5% chance of lifting the trophy.
