Haaland’s Goal Sends Norway Past Côte d’Ivoire Into Last 16
Erling Haaland scored a dramatic late winner as Norway edged Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in a Round of 32 thriller at the Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, booking a Round of 16 date with Brazil.
Antonio Nusa gave Norway the lead in the 39th minute with a curling effort from the left side of the box that beat the Ivorian goalkeeper at his near post, capping a half in which the Scandinavian side-controlled possession and limited Côte d’Ivoire’s attacking threat.
Côte d’Ivoire responded after the break and grew into the contest, with Emerse Fae’s side switching play wide to create space for left-sided forward Yan Diomande. The pressure paid off in the 74th minute when Amad Diallo levelled the score, sparking wild celebrations among the Ivorian bench and supporters inside the stadium.
The equaliser breathed fresh life into Côte d’Ivoire’s campaign, and the team continued to push forward in search of a winner, testing Norway’s defence well into second-half stoppage time.
Norway, however, had the final say. Substitute Oscar Bobb delivered a sharp pass to Patrick Berg, who threaded the ball through for Haaland to finish clinically in the 86th minute, sending the Norwegian bench into raptures and silencing the Ivorian section of the crowd.
Haaland’s strike extended his influential run-in front of goal at this year’s tournament and proved decisive in a contest both sides entered on equal footing. Both teams finished their group stage campaigns on six points, with Côte d’Ivoire suffering a 2-1 defeat to Germany and Norway falling 4-1 to France in their respective final group matches.

Tuesday’s meeting marked the first competitive encounter between the two nations, adding intrigue to a contest that lived up to its billing as one of the more closely matched ties of the Round of 32.
Possession statistics reflected the tightness of the contest, with both sides nearly level through large stretches of play. Norway’s pressing game restricted Côte d’Ivoire’s attacking rhythm for long periods, though Diomande’s pace on the left flank remained a persistent threat throughout.
Diallo’s goal stood as Côte d’Ivoire’s lone bright spot in an otherwise difficult night, with the Manchester United winger’s strike representing his side’s best moment of quality in front of goal.
For Norway, the win continues a tournament run built around their attacking spine, with Haaland’s clinical finishing complementing the creativity supplied by Nusa and the team’s midfield unit, often described by fans as the “Viking Row.”
Côte d’Ivoire’s elimination ends their 2026 World Cup campaign and brings disappointment for a squad that had shown resilience throughout the group stage before bowing out at the first knockout hurdle.
Norway will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 clash against Brazil at MetLife Stadium on July 5, a fixture that pits Haaland’s attacking threat against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who advanced from their own group with a come-from-behind win over Japan.
The result adds Norway to a growing list of Round of 32 winners advancing into the latter stages of the tournament, with the global football community now turning attention to the knockout fixtures still to come.
For Côte d’Ivoire, the focus shifts to reflection and rebuilding as the Elephants head home from a tournament that ultimately ended one round short of expectations.
