No fewer than 110 structures have been gutted by fire at parts of the Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano on Saturday.
The Public Relations Officer of Kano State Fire Service, PFS Kabiru Isah Jafaru, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano.
He said the incident was reported at about 7:39 a.m. by a timber dealer, Alhaji Abba, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from various stations across the Kano metropolis.
According to him, upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the blaze had engulfed several sections of the market.
“The fire affected 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures within the timber market,” he said.
Jafaru noted that personnel of the service successfully contained the inferno and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.
He said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined as investigation continues.
He said the Executive Director of the Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, commended the swift response of firefighters and urged traders and business owners to remain vigilant against fire outbreaks, especially during the harmattan season.
