UCL: Man Utd don’t need to save Carrick’s job – Bruno Fernandes on Roma win
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has insisted that the players are not playing to save manager Michael Carrick’s job following their Champions League victory over Roma.
Fernandes made the comments after United secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against the Italian side on Tuesday night.
The victory marked Manchester United’s first win in 10 matches across all competitions, bringing an end to their difficult run of results.
Before the encounter, there had been widespread speculation that Carrick had been given just two matches to save his position as manager.
However, Fernandes dismissed the suggestion that the team’s performance was motivated by the need to protect their manager.
“We don’t need to save anyone’s job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win,” the Portuguese midfielder said.
He added: “We have been working so hard to get out of this situation altogether. It’s been tough; there’s been a lot of speculation in the media.” Fernandes also addressed reports of disagreements between him and Carrick, insisting that they had resolved their differences.

“A lot of lies around many things that have happened between the manager and me; we have cleared the air. After that, the manager took a decision to be on the bench because I’m not performing. Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager makes the decisions,” he said. He further stressed that his belief in Carrick and the club remained unchanged, adding that his aim was to win every game ahead.
