Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has warned the club about the possible consequences of selling captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire next summer.

Reports claim negotiations between the midfielder and Manchester United over a new contract have stalled, leaving doubts over his long-term future at the club.

The 32-year-old has also recently been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, although it remains unclear whether he will leave Manchester United.

“Lots of people talk about ageing players and not giving them new contracts, but I just think Bruno Fernandes is such an important part of Manchester United,” Owen said via Metro.

“I don’t care about his age. If they lost him, then they’d take a massive, massive step back.”

Owen acknowledged that Manchester United must consider their finances but stressed that Fernandes remains highly important to the club’s results. “Obviously, you’ve got to balance the books; the finances are important, but so are the stellar results, and he is so important to them.”
