Amnesty calls for probe into Masussuka’s killing
The Nigerian authorities must immediately set up an effective and transparent investigation of the gruesome murder of prominent Islamic cleric Sheik Yahaya Masussuka — who was shot dead by gunmen on motorbikes on Monday 26 October 2026, at his home in Dutsin Ma Katsina state.
Sheik Masussuka was receiving death threats almost daily, some delivered on video that are viral on social media. Amnesty International had documented a series of threats to the life of Late Yahaya Masussuka online and offline. These alongside all alleged claims of responsibility for his killing must be impartially investigated.
Sheik Yahaya Masussuka consistently advocated against violent religious extremism and had promoted interfaith dialogue and peace — for which he was targeted repeatedly. It is appalling that repeatedly Nigeria’s security agencies failed to protect individuals at risk — even in cases where clearly lives are at high risk.

For too long the Nigerian government and its security agencies have abdicated their responsibility to defend everyone in the society from deadly forms of religious discrimination.
Failure to ensure that those suspected of killing Sheik Yahaya Masussuka are held to account can facilitate a pattern of intolerance that undermines freedom of religion and silences those with differing views and opinions.
The Nigerian authorities must protect the rights and safety of all people — no matter their views or opinions — in line with the country’s human rights obligations.
