Ballon d’Or 2026: Luka Modric makes stance clear on who wins award

Real Madrid legend Luka Modric has refused to name his preferred candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, insisting that the final decision should be left to the voters.

The AC Milan midfielder was asked about the award during an interview with Diario AS. While several players from Real Madrid and other clubs are among the contenders, Modric said he did not want to single out any individual.

“I honestly don’t know. I prefer not to mention anyone or indicate who deserves it more. The decision lies with the voters. There are numerous candidates from Madrid and other clubs. We will see who prevails; I do not wish to specify names.”

France Football has confirmed that the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on October 26. Among the notable players being considered for the award are Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise.

Modric knows what it takes to win the prestigious prize, having claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after an outstanding year with Real Madrid and the Croatian national team.

That year, he played a key role as Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Supercopa de España.

He also helped Croatia reach the FIFA World Cup final in 2018 and was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner for his impressive performances.
