British broadcaster Piers Morgan has criticised Portugal for handing Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic No.7 shirt to Rafael Leao for the team’s upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Portugal confirmed that Leao would wear Ronaldo’s famous shirt in the matches against Denmark and Norway.

The decision came after Ronaldo abruptly left the national team camp amid reports that he was frustrated by his limited playing time under head coach Jorge Jesus.

Morgan reacted to the decision in a post on X, questioning Portugal’s decision to give the shirt to another player so soon after Ronaldo’s departure.

“Disgusting, if true. After everything @Cristiano has done for Portugal, why the hell are they treating him like this?” Morgan wrote.

He also highlighted Ronaldo’s commitment to Portugal, referring to the fact that the forward played for his country shortly after the death of his father.

“Yesterday was his father’s birthday, and he played for his country the day after his dad died,” Morgan added. “Shameful to see this shocking disrespect for their greatest player.”

Leao, meanwhile, has welcomed the opportunity to wear the No.7 shirt, describing Ronaldo as his role model and expressing his happiness after being handed the number previously worn by the Portugal captain.
