EPL: ‘He’s Awful’ – Desailly Names Player That Shouldn’t Play For Chelsea Again

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly has criticised goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, calling him “awful” and saying he should not continue playing for Chelsea.

Sanchez joined Chelsea from Brighton for £25 million three years ago. However, he made another costly mistake during Chelsea’s opening Premier League match of the season against Fulham on Monday.

The Spanish goalkeeper struggled to deal with both of Fulham’s goals as Chelsea eventually won the match 3-2. His performance has increased concerns about his position as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Chelsea have now reportedly decided to bring in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The club has agreed a £7.5 million deal for the 33-year-old Argentine goalkeeper.

Martinez is expected to sign a two-year contract with Chelsea, with an option to extend it for another 12 months.

His arrival would be Chelsea’s fourth major deal with Aston Villa this summer. Morgan Rogers has already moved to Villa Park for a Premier League-record fee, while Alejandro Garnacho has also joined Unai Emery’s team. Nicolas Jackson is also expected to complete a move to Villa in a deal that could be worth up to £65 million.

Desailly believes Chelsea’s defensive problems have been made worse by Sanchez’s performances in goal.

Speaking to Metro via SportsCasting, Desailly said:

“He’s awful! You expect your defensive core to be dependable. That core includes Lacroix, followed by Fernandez, Caicedo, Palmer, and eventually the striker as well.

“It’s disheartening to witness Chelsea falter due to the goalkeeper. One might attribute it to the early stage of the season, yet such weaknesses should not be evident so soon.

“I believe we should remain optimistic that he will improve. However, it is distressing to see a Premier League goalkeeper fail to provide the stability and confidence needed for a young team”.

Sanchez was beaten at his near post by Josh King during the Fulham match. He later spilled another shot into a dangerous area, allowing Gonzalo Garcia to score.

The goalkeeper was subsequently left out of Chelsea’s squad for their EFL Cup match against Luton Town on Thursday, with young goalkeeper Mike Penders starting instead.

Chelsea went on to beat Luton 2-0, with Penders keeping goal for the Blues.
