EPL: Ian Wright slams Chelsea’s transfer decision after Arsenal defeat

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticised Chelsea’s transfer decisions after their 2-1 defeat to the Gunners on Sunday.

Wright believes Chelsea failed to address a major weakness in their squad during the summer transfer window, particularly in midfield.

Chelsea have started the season positively under Xabi Alonso, with João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer forming an impressive attacking trio. However, their midfield problems were exposed against Arsenal.

With Moises Caicedo injured, Chelsea finished the game with Malo Gusto playing in central midfield, while Arsenal were able to introduce World Cup winners Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi.

Chelsea also lost Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City on deadline day and Andrey Santos to Manchester United earlier in the summer. Wright believes the club should have acted earlier instead of making a late attempt to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco.

“I think their front three will pose problems for many teams, but it ultimately hinges on the midfield,” Wright told Sky Sports.

He added: “The only problem they will have is the midfield and the problems they may have with a couple of injuries from players in their midfield.”
